"This huge volcanic neck was formed in Pliocene times, over 3,000,000 years ago. It rises 1,700 feet above the surrounding plain and is found in the legends of the Navajo as "Sa - bit - tai - e" the rock with the wings. They hold that it was the great bird that brought them from the north."

To tour this ancient cliff dwelling we had to descend a wooden ladder down the side of the cliff, but I felt privileged to be able to do this, because I can see a time coming when such tours will be closed to the general public. Thousands of people visiting such sites have to hasten deterioration. There were more ladders at the other side to ascend to the top again.

Waking early I dressed quietly, and left Mary to sleep in. I went for a walk along the beach to the north end. The tide was out and the sea life clinging to the rocks was very colourful and most interesting. I thoroughly enjoyed myself and would love to return here again and again.

Our visit to Lassen Volcanic National Park was very short. We had intended to take the route through the park, a route closed in winter, but the road was still closed even though it was mid summer. The winter of '94/'95 had been so severe with record snow falls which were so packed down, ice was being chipped away to clear the road at the rate of ten feet a day!
Therefore we had to return the way we had come.
